The original centre of the city, which was surrounded by walls during Roman times, makes up what today is the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter). Narrow streets, with quiet squares and attractive nooks, are home to an extensive collection of civil and religious Gothic buildings.
The Ribera or El Born district was initially home to traders and seafarers, but with the passage of time many small palaces were built as well. Some of them have been converted to house important city museums, such as the Picasso Museum.
