Montjuïc

The mountain of Montjuïc (Jewish mountain) has played a leading role in many events over the course of history. The historical symbol is Montjuïc Castle (now a military museum) which dominates this emblematic hill where gems of Barcelona architecture are to be found.

The 1929 international exhibition transformed the city. The centrepiece of the exhibition was La Font Màgica (Magic Fountain) built on a raised platform at the end of the avenue against the backdrop of the Palau Nacional.

The highlight of the area and a major tourist attraction is the Poble Espanyol, built between 1926 and 1929 and a place which calls to mind some of the most important monuments in Spain such as the Torres de Ávila. It is also a great location to go to for dinner or a drink.

The last time Montjuïc underwent major building work was for the 1992 Olympic Games with the construction of the Olympic stadium, swimming pools, the Palau Sant Jordi and other facilities (Anella Olímpica or Olympic Ring). The Montjuïc Olympic Stadium is currently used by Espanyol football club for its home matches.
