Art, Architecture and Modernism
At the end of the 19th century the Eixample (enlargement), the central area of Barcelona, was laid out as a large grid with wide avenues. It was here that the emerging Catalan bourgeoisie had their mansions and small palaces built, putting into practice the most audacious principles of Modernism. Architects such as Gaudí, Doménech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch availed themselves of the services of master craftsmen to fill the streets of Barcelona with fantasy. The Park Güell, Palau Gúell and the Casa Milà "La Pedrera" by Gaudí, and the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Hospital Sant Pau by Doménech i Montaner have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The church of the Sagrada Familia, the Casa Lleó Morera, the Casa Amatller and the Casa Batlló are just some of the city's Modernist gems.

SAGRADA FAMILIA

The church stands on the block of the Eixample bounded by Provenza, Cerdeña, Mallorca and Marina streets. The first stone was laid in 1882. Antoni Gaudí worked on it for more than forty years.
In the last years of his life he refused to accept any other commissions and moved into the study cum workshop in the church, witnessing the crowning of the first belfry on the Nacimiento façade in 1925. He left behind a general plan and some initial studies which went into greater detail about the new building and its geometrical forms inspired by nature which form the nave and aisles, the columns, the windows, the vaults and the roofs.

LA PEDRERA

The world famous La Pedrera was the last residential building to be designed by Antoni Gaudí, and is widely held to be the perfect culmination of his previous experience in the construction of communal residential buildings in the Eixample.
La Pedrera, owned since December 1986 by the Caixa d'Estalvis de Catalunya, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

PARC GÜELL

This is the largest of Gaudí's works in Barcelona. It covers an area of 20 hectares, which was originally to have been an English-style garden city, hence its originally being called a park. Gaudí was helped on this project by the architect Josep Maria Jujol.

In Parc Güell visitors will find urban constructions of unusual force: the two pavilions, joined by a stone grill which stand at either side of the main entrance on Olot street, and the flight of steps at the entrance to the park; the Sala Hipóstila with its 96 columns which support the great square with a winding bench around its edge, providing a platform that looks out over Barcelona; and the infrastructures such as viaducts, retaining walls, raised walkways and other unique elements.

CASA BATLLÓ

This is one of the most charismatic houses in the whole of the Eixample. Gaudí personally designed all the parts of the building, ranging from its unique façade to all its interior features including the furniture. The façade is covered with a tiled mosaic and the roof is made of ceramics.
